What I found particularly interesting was the co-existance of Christian and Muslim on the “frontiers” – in Iberia, Anatolia and (later) the Balkans, and how these groups interacted and responded to one another.
It was an emotional ride for me and would be for anyone who has had to watch someone they love leave the world too early because of such a horrible disease. Alex Hicks starts having second thoughts about what the paramilitary group is doing. Merwin is one of the best-selling poets in America.
I was unaware of Valentines work for most of those years, perhaps because our media outlets (even the anti-establishment ones like Democracy Now and The Intercept) have been compromised. One of the portraits concerns a German soldier who documented his time at the front with photographs, some of which are included in this book. This book is mostly about a sixth grader who has too many things around her changing.
